Ayurveda and work stress

In harmony with ourselves - in harmony with the environment

The Ayurvedic approach – like all holistic systems – states that the more in tune we are with ourselves and our environment, the better we are able to cope with stress be it at work or otherwise. If we take time to take care of ourselves before and after work, it will also make it easier to manage and resolve the stress we experience during work. And in this, it means additional help if we find the activity that is really in harmony with our body-mind type.

Blood yourself!

From an Ayurvedic point of view the more we "arm" ourselves with health, harmony, serenity and inner balance, the more difficult it is for the environmental influences that affect us or the challenges we face to move us out of this state. Thus, any activity that for the harmony of our body-mind system it also means improving our ability to tolerate stress. In this, the development of a regular daily routine is given special importance, which is the dosa most easily deranged by external stressors, the Vata dosa. keeping it in balance also helps. The basis of the routine is a sufficient amount and adequate quality of rest, as well as a regular lifestyle. One of the most important elements of daily stress management is regular meditation. In recent decades, countless scientific researches have shown that deep meditation proves to be an extremely effective tool both in the field of stress management and stress relief. The most researched method of this type is Transcendental Meditation (TM), which has been the subject of hundreds of scientific studies since the seventies. During TM practice, the body and mind are extremely one into a deep state of rest occurs, which is much deeper than the rest created by sleep, even for beginner meditators. And during this deep rest, something extraordinary happens in the human body: the process that caused physiological changes as a result of external stress is reversed, and the body and the nervous system almost "throw away" the harmful changes. The quiet and happy, yet highly alert state experienced during deep relaxation also creates a stable and integrated physical and mental functioning, as a result of which the meditators are much better able to adapt to the to the extreme effects of the environment, i.e. they are resistant to stress.

Dare to change

Another major cause of workplace stress is that many people engage in activities that do not suit their body-mind type, so they will inevitably be exposed to environmental stimuli that its natural balance lead to overturning. So, for example, for those belonging to the Vata type, a work environment where predictability and regularity is most ideal reigns. THE Vats by nature, they require peace, quiet and a warm environment. Vats are usually quick in everything, but tend to be superficial. They are active, talkative, impulsive, creative, their imagination is rich and vivid. Their minds soar in many directions and quickly, with a speed that is often impossible for others to follow. As a result, they excel in activities that require quick perception and reaction, but they are unable to maintain concentration and physical activity for too long, so they are especially grateful if they have time to interrupt their work with a short rest in order to recharge their "energy banks." They are generally reluctant to take on jobs with great responsibility or leading positions. It's hard to bear the too strong environmental stimuli, the noises, the constant alertness, and the cold and the draft. Their nervous system and senses are sophisticated and sensitive - they are the least able to withstand psychological stress and overnight stays of the three types.

The hot Pittas true leaders and entrepreneurs. They are goal-oriented, true careerists who always want to get higher and further, especially if there is someone to compete with! They are good speakers, persuasive negotiators, and when they are in balance, they are friendly and cordial. Compared to Vatas, who tend to be scattered, they organize their lives efficiently and precisely, they require the order and the orderly environment. They are resourceful, their intellects are sharp and precise. They love challenges, but this can often be their downfall: their recklessness can often lead them into situations they cannot cope with, and in many cases they take on so many burdens and tasks that they collapse after a while.

Due to their temperament, they are prone to collisions, conflicts, selfishness, bragging and "elbowing" - and often they don't have a problem if they have to run over others to get ahead. Pittas have a hard time with the warm or hot environment and bright light. And in constant conflict situations, together with others, sooner or later they grind themselves.

Cool, slow, cheerful Kaphas for him, challenges, activity and environmental stimuli are life. Due to repetitive sameness, constancy, and lack of movement, they easily become inactive, listless, or lethargic. Kaphas therefore thrive in a work environment where in constant movement, variety, they can be part of more and more new experiences and encounters. They love to travel, and unlike Vatas, who quickly suffocate, they cope well with longer trips of several days. Their bodies are strong and durable, and they are not tired even by stronger physical demands. Due to their great endurance and stable nervous system, they can cope with extreme length and intensity; their load capacity and stress tolerance are the best of the three doshas, but this should not necessarily be abused, excessive use sooner or later leaves a lasting mark on the body. Kaphas typically work slowly, but very precisely. Their perception and reactions are slower than others, but their long-term memory is excellent. Their emotions are very deep, their emotional conflicts are more difficult to process and forget. As a "cold" dosa, they tolerate heat well, for them the damp-cool environment the most unpleasant.

Getting to know ourselves and our nature more thoroughly can be a huge help in choosing a work environment that really supports our physical and mental well-being.  Being aware of our own strengths and limitations gives us the opportunity to consciously avoid environments and situations that have a negative effect on us. In addition, it also points out how we can incorporate elements into our daily routine that contribute to maintaining our inner balance. In this way, we can not only do our work more efficiently and effectively, but also maintain our physical and mental health in the long term.

So don't be afraid to change if we feel that our current work environment does not suit our nature! Let's be brave to take new paths and create an environment around us that really harmonizes with our personality and natural needs. Only in this way can we truly develop our abilities and live a life in which we can find inner peace and satisfaction not only in our work, but also in our everyday life.
